>> NEW REPORT SRLP is proud to announce the publication of a new report, It's War In Here: A Report on the Treatment of Transgender and Intersex People in New York State Men's Prisons.

>> On July 20, 2007 Victoria Arellano, a transgender woman who was also HIV-positive, died after the San Pedro Immigration Detention facility deliberately failed to provide her with the health care she needed while in their custody. SRLP, among many other organizations and individuals, denounces the appalling behavior of the Department of Homeland Security. >> NEWS The American Medical Association has amended their nondiscrimination policy to prohibit discrimination on the basis of gender identity. The report of the Board of Trustees' approval of the policy change recognizes the unique barriers transgender people face in accessing safe healthcare. The support of the AMA is an encouraging step towards reducing the barriers that trans people face not only as patients but also as people seeking training or employment as health providers. >> The Board of Correction is trying to roll back minimum standards for New York City jails.

>> Congratulations to Mariah and Lawyers for Children! A favorable ruling has just been granted in their suit against the Administration for Children's Services, which refused to provide sexual reassignment surgery for Mariah when her health care was their responsibility. SRLP is very excited about this landmark decision, which re-affirms that government institutions must be accountable for the health of people in their care, and recognizes that this responsibilty must include trans people and trans-related health care.
