SRLP’s Pooja Gehi presents in a day-long institute:

Violence against transgender people is a national crisis, particularly against transgender women of color. According ott he National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs, of the 25 documented anti-LGBTQ homicides in 2012, 53.8% of victims were transgender women, and 73.1% of all anti-LGBTQ homicide victims were people of color. In addition, transgender people were 1.67 times as likely to experience threats and intimidation, 3.32 times as likely to experience police violence, and transgender people of color were 2.46 times as likely to experience physical violence by the police.

This institute will focus on various forms of violence that transgender people experience. People have a misconceptions that hate violence is only experienced by transgender people on the streets and in the workplace, but transgender people experience violence at the hands of loved ones, parents, in the home, and from the police. We will look at the cycle and patterns of hate and violence that impact the trans community. We will explore the hate and violence that begins in the home, at school, medical facilities, at work, the streets, and other places that we navigate. We will discuss methods and best practices currently being used around the country to curb and prevent this violence. We will then look at how we can engage and work with partners to increase the awareness and work in this arena to better protect ourselves and build better programs. Finally, we will explore other possible new solutions.

Pooja will present with Kylar W. Broadus, Esq (National Gay and Lesbian Task Force), Cecilia Chung (Health Commissioner, City of San Francisco), Anand Kalra (Transgender Law Center), Mara Keisling (National Center for Transgender Equality), Parker T. Hurley (Trans People of Color Coalition), Andrea Jenkins Policy Aide, City of Minneapolis), Clem Lee (Immigration Equality), Danny Kirchoff (Transgender Law Center), Tiq Milan (GLAAD), Bamby Salcedo (Trans Latin@ Coalition), Kim Watson (Community Kinship Life), Willy Wilkinson (Public Health Consultant), & Jaan Williams (Victory Fund).
