LGBT contra brutalidad policíaca
El Diario covered the press conference that SRLP held in response to the police violence against community members at SRLP's post-anniversary party.

New York - Members of the LGBT organization SRLP celebrated yesterday
that the authorities have not pressed charges against two of their
members who were arrested "violently," and announced that they are
considering suing the NYPD.
"This is a great victory for us," said Jack Aponte, a member of SRLP,
who referred to the fact that the police did not press charges against
Ileana Méndez-Peñate and Reggie Gosset, arrested on September 26 when
they celebrated the anniversary of the organization, but who were
freed the next day without being charged.
The incident occurred around 10:30pm in Marion's Restaurant, located
at 354 Bowery in the East Village, Manhattan, when the police were
called about a fight in the establishment.
"We went outside because our community is accustomed to being the
target of mistreatment by the police," said Aponte. "We went outside
to observe, to be witnesses and to document what was happening;
because we were questioning how the police were acting, we took down
names, badge numbers and took photos."
According to statements from SRLP, the officers involved used
"unnecessary force" and abused as many as a dozen of their members
when they used pepper spray on them.
In a statement, the press commissioner of the NYPD, Paul Browne,
indicated that the manager of the restaurant called the police about a
fight between two people and that Gossett, 24, was one of the people
who were arrested for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
Additionally, Méndez-Peñate, 25, was arrested for interfering with the
arrest. Méndez-Peñate said that she was the target of "racist
comments" when they were taken to jail, but did not give details about
the comments because they are contemplating a suit.
"Forty years after [Stonewall], our community is still under attack.
Today we gather to say that we will not allow this to continue," said
Rosie Méndez, councilperson from District 2 in Manhattan."
