Legal Observing

The Sylvia Rivera Law Project offers legal support for some direct actions in the New York City area.  We prioritize requests for actions that centralize the leadership of transgender, intersex, and gender nonconforming people, low-income people, and people of color.  We can organize legal observers to watch and record police activity at actions.  We can also recruit volunteer attorneys willing to represent people who are arrested in connection to their participation in the action.  We strive to provide legal support for actions that is consistent with our social justice and anti oppression values.  If you would like to request legal observers for your action, please fill out this form and send it back to us by e-mail to info@srlp.org or fax to 212-337-1972.  Please try to give us your request as far in advance as you can, at least forty-five daysbefore the date of the event if at all possible.  Thank you!

SRLP also worked together with the National Center for Transgender Equality to put together a guide for transgender people participating in actions.

Please note that a separate organization, the National Lawyers’ Guild, organizes legal observers for many types of actions across the country.  Please contact them directly for more information.
