NYPD Search Policy Change

Low income trans people of color are routinely illegally stripped/seized/arrested/beaten/abused by police.  Recently, there has been litigation around illegal strip searches, in particular.  A number or activists and organizations have come together to create a working group to submit a best practices policy that will affect the NYPD patrol guide, particularly in the areas of searches, detention, healthcare, confidentiality, harassment and forms of address, profiling and false arrests, and release on Desk Appearance Tickets.  Ultimately, we hope that these policies will decrease police misconduct against trans people in NYC and will give trans people a stronger tool to use in advocacy and litigation when police misconduct does happen.
