The Sylvia Rivera Law Project is a non-profit founded in 2002 to challenge discrimination faced by people who are transgender, intersex, and gender non-conforming. SRLP has provided free legal services to over 900 clients and litigated a number of precedent-setting cases regarding the rights of transgender foster youth, access to name change, transgender youth in juvenile justice settings, transgender parents, and transgender prisoners. Transgender communities still face enormous violence and discrimination, and SRLP is a leading legal organization addressing these issues, changing law and policy, and serving clients who have been kicked out of shelters, abused by the police, denied medical care, and fired from jobs because of gender identity or expression.
