SRLP is Hiring a Director of Membership!

After four years of incredible work as the Director of Membership, Reina Gossett will be leaving the organization. Reina’s vision and work at SRLP has been instrumental in helping us achieve our mission, and it is with deep gratitude and sadness that we say goodbye to her. The Sylvia Rivera Law Project (SRLP) works to guarantee that all people are free to self-determine their gender identity and expression, regardless of income or race, and without facing harassment, discrimination, or violence. SRLP is a collective organization founded on the understanding that gender self-determination is inextricably intertwined with racial, social and economic justice. Therefore, we seek to increase the political voice and visibility of low-income people and people of color who are transgender, intersex, or gender non-conforming. SRLP works to improve access to respectful and affirming social, health, and legal services for our communities. We provide direct legal services with the understanding that to create meaningful political participation and leadership, our communities must have access to basic means of survival and safety from violence.

The Membership Director is a co-director of the SRLP and shares responsibility for collectively running the organization. The Membership Director is a key person in building SRLP’s leadership development work overall, especially of the leadership of low income trans, gender non conforming and intersex people and/or trans, gender non conforming, intersex people of color.

This position builds and maintains relationships with new SRLP members to deepen their involvement and leadership skills. The Membership Director works closely with the Director of Outreach and Community Engagement to put on SRLP’s monthly Membership Meetings; works with the Direct Services Team (DST) to plug SRLP members into coalitions aimed at changing policies that impact our communities; and develops and maintain relationships with allied community organizations.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Plan and host monthly membership meetings focused on skill shares and increasing political participation of SRLP membership
  • Develop SRLP’s grassroots campaigns (using written/verbal and/or media skills) based on challenges faced by community members
  • Conduct one-on-one meetings and orientations with members to support member leadership in SRLP’s teams, events, programs and core collective
  • Plan and host Movement Building Team (MBT) monthly events, including know-your-rights trainings and member skill-sharing
  • Participate in development of fact sheets and position statements
  • Represent SRLP’s work at panels and conferences around the country
  • Grow and maintain SRLP’s relationships with allied community organizations, and build new relationships with organizations doing work around SRLP’s mission and values
  • Coordinate member participation in local and national policy change initiatives as well as cross-movement coalitions
  • Coordinate annual MBT work plan development and implementation
  • Hire and supervise MBT interns

Other Responsibilities

  • Participate in bi-weekly staff meetings, monthly Collective Meetings and bi-annual retreats in order to share responsibility for collectively running the organization
  • Participate in individual, team and staff supervision and evaluations
  • Promote organizational goals and values at actions, conferences, forums, and through public speaking
  • Participate in funding activities as necessary

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated commitment to gender self-determination and racial and economic justice
  • Familiarity and direct experience with SRLP’s constituency: low income trans, gender non conforming and intersex people and/or trans, gender non conforming, intersex people of color.
  • 1-3 years of community organizing experience with demonstrated ability to carry out the described job responsibilities
  • 1-3 years of demonstrated experience running/co-directing an organization
  • Willingness to work in a collective environment with consensus-based decision-making
  • Excellent workshop facilitation and/or teaching skills
  • Demonstrated experience with political education and development of training curriculums
  • Experience with creating and implementing media campaigns
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize work and coordinate work independently within a collaborative team setting
  • Fluency in Spanish and English preferred
  • Proficiency with Windows-based word processing, spreadsheets, databases, email and the Internet

Hours and Compensation

This position is a part-time, salaried position with medical, dental and optical benefits as well as three weeks paid vacation. Employer pays 100% of premiums for benefits.

32 hours/week, some evenings and weekends with a possibility of increasing to 40 hours a week. $43,068/year. Consistent with our values as a collective, all staff receive salaries based on the same hourly rate.
