Success! Hey Shah Where’s The Love? Protest turns out community, NYS Senator Brad Hoylman

Yesterday’s protest at the NYS Department of Health office was an incredible success thanks to the support of community members, Trans Justice of the Audre Lorde Project, Make the Road, Trans Women of Color Coalition and Trans Latinas!

Hundreds of people including NYS Senator Brad Hoylman joined the already thousands of people calling on Governor Coumo and Commissioner Shah to repeal the medicaid regulation that denies trans and gender non conforming people healthcare.

If you weren’t able to make it you can still take action by visiting our healthcare campaign page here.

Special thanks to Syd London for the amazing photos below!

"Where's the love Shah?"

"Where's the love Shah?" "Where's the love Shah?" "Where's the love Shah?" "Where's the love Shah?" "Where's the love Shah?" "Where's the love Shah?" "Where's the love Shah?"

[…] Medicaid in New York specifically denies medically necessary healthcare to trans and gender non conforming people, just because of who we are. Trans healthcare includes the same healthcare that non-trans people have access to through Medicaid when they need it. However, because of a discriminatory regulation, transgender people are banned from accessing the very same care. Whether it is routine or preventative care, transgender and gender non-conforming New Yorkers need access to safe, affordable healthcare. SRLP and GLAAD launched a campaign calling for healthcare for all which includes a series of PSA videos that have been viewed nearly 100,000 times, an infographic, and a petition with over 2,600 signatures.  SRLP also partnered with Trans Justice of the Audre Lorde Project, Trans Latinas, Trans Women of Color Collective and Make the Road NY to protest the regulation on Valentine’s Day.
