Call to Action: Support Trans and Gender Non-Conforming New Yorkers at NYC Budget Hearing Next Week

On Tuesday, March 27th, at 10:00 am, the New York City Council is holding an NYC Council Budget and Oversight Hearing on the Fiscal Year 2019 Preliminary Budget for the Human Resources Administration, Department of Social Services, and Department of Homeless Services.

Come out to City Hall at 3:00 pm for the Public Hearing and support SRLP members and staff who will be testifying during the General Welfare Hearing about the need for stronger housing and employment supports and services for trans and gender non-conforming New Yorkers.

Following the policy brief “Solutions Out of Struggle” released with other community-based organizations, SRLP is preparing to speak and mobilizing our community to be present during NYC Budget Hearings!

Come out and hold an “I Support TGNC New Yorkers” or “Trans People Need Employment and Housing Support Now” 8.5” x 11” poster. Let Council Member Levin and the rest of the committee know just how important it is to invest in our community solutions!

For more information, contact Sasha Alexander, Director of Membership at the Sylvia Rivera Law Project.

What is a budget hearing?
There is a public hearing during each of the committees’ meetings to prepare for the City’s budget for next year.

Why does this matter?
Many of the solutions we identified as a community were for existing agencies to better provide the supports they do, or create specific support, for trans and gender non-conforming New Yorkers. Budget hearings are one place we can have our collective power felt.

Who will be there?
The NYC General Welfare Council is made up of City Council Members; Stephen T. Levin is the Chair. Members include Adrienne E. Adams, Diana Ayala, Vanessa L. Gibson, Mark Gjonaj, Barry S. Grodenchik, Brad S. Lander, Antonio Reynoso, Rafael Salamanca, Jr., Ritchie J. Torres and Mark Treyger

What should I know if I am planning to attend?
To enter City Hall, you need to go through security. Advise them you are attending the General Welfare Budget Hearing. SRLP staff and members will be carrying 8.5” x 11” signs. If you would like to testify, you need to bring 21 copies of your testimony with you and you will have 3 minutes.
