Donate NowYour support made it possible for SRLP to continue our work with trans people of color and low-income trans people in 2015. Together we…
- Won trans healthcare coverage under New York State Medicaid after 12 years of community organizing and impact litigation – now all trans and gender nonconforming New Yorkers can get the healthcare we need!
- Successfully pushed New York City and New York State to remove the requirement of surgery for changing the gender marker on a birth certificate
- With coalition partners, won a New York City Municipal ID that allows for applicants to self-attest our gender–meaning people who are low-income, homeless, and undocumented immigrants can obtain a gender-affirming ID without cumbersome medical documentation
- Successfully pushed for new legislation to limit enforcement of immigration detainers in New York City
- SRLP’s Prisoner Advisory Committee (PAC) blog featured 30 essays, poems, stories, and letters from members of PAC, made up of transgender and gender nonconforming people in prison
- Following the leadership of our members, we launched the End Solitary campaign to end punitive solitary confinement and work toward creating safer housing options for transgender and gender nonconforming people in prison – our petition was signed by over 1,000 supporters
- Held the 10th annual Small Works for Big Change art event, featuring art by members of SRLP’s Prisoner Advisory Committee
- Trained over 200 NYC Department of Corrections staff for the new Transgender Housing Unit at Rikers
- Trained over 60 clerks in the New York City Civil Court and over 350 staff at the New York City Human Resources Administration
- Trained almost 1,800 students, lawyers, judges and service providers this year to increase awareness and support of trans people navigating employment, housing, education, and the criminal legal system
- Built the skills and leadership of over 150 community members through “Know Your Rights” trainings and workshops
- Provided free and affirming legal services to over 380 transgender and gender nonconforming people
- Celebrated the incredible work of our trans healthcare campaign partners at our Attorneys and Advocates Awards in November
- Awarded SRLP’s first-ever Matthew Carmody Fellowship to John Skwiersky
- And welcomed Sasha Alexander, Juana Peralta, and Rage Kidvai to the SRLP staff team!
And because we are stronger when our work is funded by our community, we invite you to make your year-end tax deductible gift to SRLP before midnight tonight at http://srlp.org/2014gift
