Johanna Breiding’s practice stems from photography, considering the medium’s history, its representational role and limitations. Incorporating video and installation to emphasize voice, movement, and experiential pathos, she locates her work within the intersection of analogue and digital technologies, the construction of gender and cultural identity, and the questioning of heteronormative ideologies within the personal and social space. Breiding attended the Glasgow School of Art and received her Masters from CalArts. She has exhibited work both nationally and internationally including Photo LA, Human Resources gallery, Elga Wimmer gallery, Susanne Vielmetter gallery, the Armory Center for the Arts, Souther Exposure and the Berkeley Art Museum. Originally from a small village in Switzerland, Johanna Breiding currently lives and works between San Francisco and Los Angeles, techinga t SFAI and CalArts.
