SRLP Awaits New Health Commissioner Appointment and Continues to Demand Trans-Inclusive Healthcare for Low-Income New Yorkers

Since 2011, SRLP and our allies have worked to pressure New York Health Commissioner Dr. Nirav Shah to repeal the Medicaid regulation that bars low-income transgender and gender nonconforming people from accessing health care. This past February 14, SRLP and our allies at TransJustice of the Audre Lorde Project, Make the Road, Trans Women of Color Coalition, and Trans Latinas, along with New York State Senator Brad Hoylman rallied outside the Department of Health to demand that Governor Cuomo and Commissioner Shah change the policy to ensure safe and affordable healthcare for all New Yorkers.

Yesterday, the Department of Health announced that Commissioner Shah will step down in June to take an executive position with Kaiser Foundation Health Plan in California. Incidentally, Kaiser provides trans health care.

We are awaiting the announcement of Commissioner Shah’s replacement, who will be appointed by Governor Cuomo in the coming weeks. SRLP and our allies will continue to pressure the new Health Commissioner and demand trans-inclusive health care and a Medicaid policy that is inclusive of all low-income New Yorkers.
